A Nice Deed Remembered

Facebook is a good thing. I find myself keeping up with people that I haven't seen since my childhood. I received a note from a kid who used to go to St. Simon wayyy back in the day. He added me as a friend the other day. He then proceeded to send me this note:

"That 4th - 6th grade at St. Simon really was a turning point in my life...and I've always remembered that you were so nice to me, even when I didn't deserve it. I just want to say thank you...I had a really rough home life during that time, and your kindness really did have a positive influence on me. I have always measured people against you...if they were as nice as Karen, or if they weren't as nice as Karen. I know that sounds a little goofy, but ya gotta remember I didn't know very many nice people. Anyway...I just wanted to tell you I'm sorry if I ever hurt you...I truly am. And I am truly a better man for having known you...Thank you!"

It made me cry. To think that something I did when I was somewhere between 9-12 years old had such a positive effect on someone's life truly touches my heart. I can't imagine a more wonderful compliment.

I've always been nice to everyone. I'm not here to judge people... although sure, I might chuckle or what not at what someone is wearing, etc... I am human, and I am very opinionated. But in general, all people are worthy of friendship and I'll talk to a homeless person just like I'll talk to one of my best friends. People like to be treated as human beings. So many time we forget that. I've been that kid who was made fun of growing up. Kids are mean. Adults are mean too... they're just a bit more sneaky about it.

I guess what I really want to say here is to be nice! You never know how something you say might affect someone's life. Choose your words carefully... always.
